Renault och McLaren hotade att bojkotta Australiens Grand Prix

Fick in en spännande länk från Jon i kommentarerna. Ed Gorman som skriver om F1 på The Times har en riktigt intressant artikel ute i dagens tidning. Tydligen ska Ron Dennis och Flavio Briatore mött Bernie Ecclestone tidigare i veckan och krävt att få del av utlovade pengar. Efter att Bernie hållt tillbaka med dem hotade både Renault och McLaren att boykotta Australiens Grand Prix och inte skicka ner bilarna. Nu var det väl redan packade och ivägskickade, men artikeln avslöjar en del sandlåde-spel på hög nivå. Bra läsning! Som exempelvis;

“Flavio said, ‘we’re not going to put our cars on the plane, we’re not going to Melbourne.’ He — Flavio — started it, aided and abetted by Ron Dennis,” Ecclestone said. With Flavio and Ron threatening to get FOTA onside also, Bernie moved to cancel the cargo planes to Australia “I picked up the phone to our people that handle all the freight to ask them to cancel the aeroplanes. They were saying, ‘all the Fota-schmota are not going — nobody’s going to go.’ So I said what I’d better do is cancel the aircraft obviously. It costs a fortune to charter those things and almost as much to cancel them.”

The move seems to have worked in Bernie’s favour, as all teams’ cars have arrived this week in Melbourne ahead of Sunday’s race. Although Ecclestone was unperturbed by the threat, he said he hates it when they fail to deliver. “If they come in here with a gun and hold it to my head, they had better be sure they can f***ing pull the trigger,” he said. “And they should make sure it’s got bullets in it because, if they miss, they better look out.”
